A journey through history and wine tradition

Discovering Trieste

Trieste, the capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia swept by the wind, has a fascinating history where different cultures and traditions have merged over time. Often chosen as a destination for a weekend getaway or as a stopover on trips to Croatia and Slovenia, it holds many little gems to explore. First and foremost is Piazza Unità d’Italia, the largest square in Europe open to the sea, flanked by some of the city’s most important historic buildings.

Just a few steps from the square lies the Borgo Teresiano, the elegant district built along the picturesque Grand Canal, crossed by the Ponte Rosso and known for the statue of James Joyce. Many artists are tied to Trieste and commemorated with bronze statues scattered around the city: alongside the Irish writer, you can encounter Italo Svevo, Umberto Saba, and Gabriele D’Annunzio. In addition to museums, historic buildings, theaters, and coffee tastings, a visit to Miramare Castle is a must: perched on the sea just a few kilometers from the center, it is surrounded by a vast park.

Trieste, however, is not only famous for the bora wind and its literary landmarks, but also for its close ties with wine. Friuli-Venezia Giulia is renowned worldwide for its production of white and red wines, especially in the Carso and Collio regions, and boasts several Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) and Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC). Each winery tells the story of a passion passed down through generations and of a deep connection with the land and nature. Which wineries in the region’s wine-producing areas are worth a visit?

  • Vodopivec (Colludrozza, Sgonico) produces Vitovska, the wine of the Carso, following a long family farming tradition in harmony with nature and its rhythms.
  • Kante (Prepotto, Duino-Aurisina) creates fresh, authentic, and elegant wines, carrying forward innovation and experimentation while respecting the purity of nature.
  • The Renato Keber winery (Zegla, Cormons), located on a hill at the border with Slovenia in an area particularly suited to Tocai production, is home to the award-winning Tocai Friulano.
  • Zidarich (Prepotto, Duino-Aurisina) produces native Carso wines, stored in a cellar more than 20 meters underground with constant temperature and humidity, and boasts a beautiful view over the Gulf of Trieste.
  • The Ritter de Záhony estate (Aquileia), halfway between the Carnic Alps and the sea, lies in an ideal terroir for vine cultivation, which gives its wines unique characteristics.
  • Bajta Salež (Sales, Sgonico) preserves some of the most authentic traditions of the Carso, keeping alive the secrets of the vegetable garden, livestock farming, and vineyards.
