Mini guide to one of the oldest cities in Poland

Walking around Wrocław

We are located in the southwest of Poland, in the capital of the Lower Silesia region: Wrocław, known in English as Wrocław. The city stands on 12 islands connected by 112 bridges and is crossed by the Oder River and numerous canals. It is one of the largest cultural and intellectual centers in Poland, and is home to several historical sites, places of interest, theaters, museums, and art galleries.

The oldest part of the city, Ostrów Tumski, is a very picturesque medieval quarter located on Cathedral Island. As the name suggests, this area is home to the impressive Gothic-style cathedral and the Collegiate Church of Santa Croce. Here you can live a unique experience, walking through the cobbled alleys and along the Ulica Idziego, a street that has become famous for its gas lamps, which are turned on and off every day by a friendly lamplighter.

The heart of the city is the historic Market Square, surrounded by beautiful colorful buildings and the center of economic life. Dominating the scene are the Town Hall, a jewel of civil Gothic architecture, now home to the Wrocław City Museum, and its clock tower. Also characteristic are the Hansel and Gretel Houses, dedicated to the protagonists of the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tale.

For history and art enthusiasts, not to be missed are the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice, a huge painting, one of the main attractions of Wrocław, which reproduces the 1794 battle between the Polish army and that of the Russian Empire near the village of Racławice; the Baroque-style Royal Palace, once home to the Prussian monarchy and now home to the Museum on the History of the City; and the important University, which in addition to having trained several Nobel Prize winners, houses several works of art and beautifully frescoed classrooms.

If you love nature, you won’t be disappointed. In Wrocław you can visit the University Botanical Garden, an oasis of peace and relaxation just a few steps from the center, and the Szczytnicki Park, one of the oldest in Europe with about 7,500 species of plants, or choose to discover the castles of Lower Silesia, set in the natural landscapes of the region.

Wrocław is also known for its lively nightlife and typical restaurants that allow you to taste the traditional dishes of the Lower Silesian region. Last but not least, keep your eyes open! The whole city is dotted with small statues depicting gnomes engaged in different activities. Born as a protest against the government in the 80s, they have now become a much-loved symbol for those visiting Wroclaw for the first time.
