Discovering the Portuguese capital

The colors of Lisbon

The most iconic image of Lisbon is that of its many narrow streets traversed by the city’s iconic yellow tram, a true symbol. In Portugal’s capital, saudade—the yearning traditionally associated with the city—is intertwined with the unbridled joy of living, while the melancholic notes of Fado blend with the rushing waves of the Atlantic, which looms over the shores from which great explorers set sail in the 15th and 16th centuries to reach and discover uncharted lands

Lisbon is waiting to be discovered and visited, starting with its most famous and characteristic neighborhoods: from Bairro Alto to Baixa, passing through Belém and Alfama, you can discover truly authentic places where you can discover the city’s cultural identity, observe the locals, and experience the true charm of the Portuguese capital with its slow and relaxed pace.

Rich in history and culture, it is also a modern, forward-looking, green, and sustainable city: in 2020, the European Commissioner for the Environment elected it European Green Capital.

Lisbon can be explored through places and experiences for all tastes, suitable for different types of travelers.

On the trail of the navigators

The most famous explorer to set out from the Portuguese city was Vasco da Gama, the first to reach India by circumnavigating Africa in 1497. In Lisbon, you will have the opportunity to visit his tomb in the Jerónimos Monastery or his funerary monument in the Church of Santa Engrácia, but if you are planning a longer trip, you can travel as far as Sines, the navigator’s hometown.

Belém and Portuguese delights

Known for its tower, Belém represents Lisbon’s Golden Age, the era of explorers and navigators. But this neighborhood is also famous for being home to Pastéis de Belém, the first—and most popular—pastry shop for the iconic Portuguese pastéis de nata. Invented in a monastery in the early 19th century, the secret recipe for these sweet, cream-filled tarts was passed down to posterity following the Liberal Revolution of 1820 and has remained unchanged since 1837.

A viewpoint over the city

Wandering through the narrow streets of Alfama, you’ll come across many unexpected squares and viewpoints: the most distinctive is the Miradouro de Santa Luzia, characterized by a distinctive arched structure that in spring and summer is tinged with the colors of the plants and flowers that cover it, and, in all seasons, reflects the hues of the traditional azulejos. From here, you can admire dreamy views of the Tagus River and the neighborhood’s typical red roofs, as well as Lisbon’s Arab walls, the dome of Santa Engrácia, the Church of Santo Estevao, and the twin white towers of the Church of São Miguel.

Lisbon redeveloped

After years out of the spotlight, the Alcântara neighborhood has been redeveloped and transformed thanks to the Lx Factory, a hub brimming with creativity and excitement, supported by companies and professionals from diverse sectors. Lx Factory hosts a variety of events in fashion, advertising, communications, multimedia, art, architecture, music, and literature, breathing new life into this part of the city. Reborn in 2008 as a “factory” of creativity and experiences, it now boasts more than 50 shops, restaurants, clubs, and cultural spaces, fashion and design boutiques, bookstores, and co-working spaces housed within 19th-century buildings, now renovated and furnished with vintage pieces, modern antiques, and urban art.

Between the ocean and modernity

The Lisbon Oceanarium is the second largest aquarium in Europe. It is spread across two floors and divided into various themed areas that occupy the corners of the building and focus on different marine biotopes, such as those from the North Atlantic coast, those from the Antarctic coast, those from the mild Pacific, and those from the coral reefs of the Indian Ocean. At the center of the main hall, you can admire a huge tank representing the union of all the oceans, with various species of sharks, rays, barracudas, manta rays, rare sunfish, and much more. The Oceanarium is located within the Parque das Naciones, a neighborhood built after Expo 1998, where steel, glass, and white-painted reinforced concrete structures create an urban-style architecture, a truly successful redevelopment project. It can also be reached by cable car, which offers breathtaking views of the Tagus River and the entire neighborhood.
