Olive harvesting

The techniques of hand harvesting and cold pressing of olives have been handed down in Tuscany since the seventh century and are still carried out today, in autumn. These techniques and the oil that derives from them represent a symbol of Versilia and Tuscany, with 43 labels of extra virgin olive oil among the most appreciated in Italy and in the world and awarded the highest recognition: The Three Leaves of Gambero Rosso. Taste some of them and discover their secrets, processes – from harvesting to oil production – and history, visiting the oil mills of which Versilia is rich. You can also participate in the olive harvesting and pressing yourself, living a unique experience.

Lucca Comics & Games

In Lucca, between October and November, the Lucca Comics and Games kicks off, one of the most important events of comics, illustrations, animated cinema and games in the world. If you are passionate about it, or if you are just curious to walk around the walls of Lucca among numerous cosplayers, don’t miss it: you will immerse yourself in a truly fantasy atmosphere Magic.

The fair is perfect for everyone, even families. Tickets for children under 10 years old are free, but require reservation. If they sell out, you can still visit the junior (children’s) stands outside the fair free of charge.

Water, “land” and walking sports

If you are a surfing lover or want to try your hand at this sport for the first time, Versilia is perfect. In fact, in autumn, thanks to the southwest wind and the mistral, the area can boast exceptional waves for surfing. The best spots in which to practice it are Idrovora, the beach of Ronchi in Forte dei Marmi, the Darsena beach in Viareggio, Fossa dell’Abate (between Lido di Camaiore and Viareggio) and Marina di Pietrasanta. Here you can practice independently or rent equipment and board and take lessons on the basics of surfing and kitesurfing. But the autumn period and the waters of Versilia are also excellent for canoeing, sailing or other water sports, independently or followed by an instructor.

If you prefer dry land, you can take part in guided excursions by e-bike or classic bicycle. Several itineraries start from Camaiore and allow you to explore the best views of north-western Tuscany: Montemagno, Freddana Lucca, Massaciuccoli and Viareggio. Cycling with the e-bike will reduce fatigue and fully enjoy the landscapes that open up in front of you. Alternatively, you can walk between Lido di Camaiore and Viareggio, and let yourself be enchanted by the perfect autumn quiet of the beautiful Versilian beaches.

Marble quarries

The marble quarries are a must visit of the Apuan Alps, in the upper Versilia. Here, accompanied by a guide in the imposing white quarries, you will discover very high ceilings, huge marble blocks and different means of excavation. You will learn about the extraordinary history of the quarry, all the extraction techniques of today and yesterday and the inseparable relationship between marble and the inhabitants of the area.

You will live a 360° experience admiring the progress of the mining activities. On days when the excavators are not on duty, however, you can enjoy a breakfast or lunch full of Versilia products prepared by small local producers, and drink the wine that is aged in one of the largest caves in the world. The activity retraces the traditional breaks of the excavators, who, to regain strength during work between meals, ate lard and bread. The experience will take place on a panoramic terrace from which you have a breathtaking view of Forte dei Marmi, Corsica and the island of Giglio.
