Cinque Terre: beyond the beaches

This stretch of coastline on the Riviera di Levante, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most beloved destinations for those who desire an experience that combines the charm of historic villages with the pleasure of trekking in nature. The Cinque Terre, famous for its pastel-colored villages surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, is a highly popular destination, but few choose to venture onto the numerous trails that cross the Cinque Terre National Park.

The five villages that dot the rugged coastline offer diverse and unique atmospheres: Monterosso al Mare is the largest and most accessible, loved for its beach and an elegant and lively historic center. Vernazza, famous for its picturesque small square overlooking the harbor dominated by the Doria Castle tower, represents the most classic atmosphere of the Cinque Terre. Corniglia is the only one of the five villages to not have direct access to the sea, but it is surrounded by terraces and crossed by trails, perfect for those who love trekking, nature and a quieter environment. Manarola, famous for its pastel-colored houses, offers one of the most iconic and photographed panoramas in Italy. And finally, Riomaggiore, a maze of alleys and steep staircases that descend towards the small marina, offers some of the most beautiful views of the sea, especially at sunset.

For centuries, the trails that connect these villages have been the only means of communication between the local communities. Today, it is possible to hike a vast network of paths that winds for over 120 kilometers in the Cinque Terre National Park. Crossing them, one can admire breathtaking panoramas, breathing the sea breeze and the scent of the Mediterranean scrub, and rediscovering a profound connection with the territory.

The Sentiero Azzurro is the most famous route, which skirts the sea connecting the five villages. Sections like the one between Monterosso and Vernazza offer spectacular views of the cliffs, through vineyards and olive groves. One of the most famous paths, part of the trail, is La Via dell’Amore, carved into the rock sheer above the sea to connect Riomaggiore and Manarola.

For the more experienced in search of an experience away from the most crowded circuits, the via dei Santuari connects the sanctuaries perched above each village and, developing along the hilltops, offers panoramic views that embrace the entire coastal arc. Another option is the Alta Via delle Cinque Terre, which connects Levanto to Portovenere, a trek that follows the highest points of the Park through woods and wilder natural environments. The view of the iconic villages and the Ligurian Sea remains a constant in all cases.

Whether one chooses to travel the entire coast on foot or to alternate walking with boat trips, the Cinque Terre remains an ever-fascinating travel idea that regenerates the spirit through the beauty of the Ligurian landscape.
