Late summer escapes

As the days grow shorter and summer begins to fade, the crowds disappear from Europe’s beaches. What remains is one of the most enchanting seasons for sea lovers: September and October offer the perfect opportunity to rediscover the coastline with fresh eyes—free from mass tourism, bathed in softer light, and steeped in authenticity. It’s the time of the last swim, when silence, golden hues, warm waters, and a raw, essential beauty take centre stage.

In southern Europe, September is simply a natural extension of summer. The air remains warm, the sun still generous, and the sea retains the heat of the previous months. But everything moves slower, quieter, and with greater intimacy.

In Greece, the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands are at their best: perfect for swimming, wandering through whitewashed villages, and exploring ancient ruins—without the bustle of high season. Paros, Naxos, Amorgos, and Symi invite slow travel, with relaxed rhythms and sunsets reflected in crystalline waters.

In Italy, the southern coasts and larger islands—Sicily, Sardinia, as well as lesser-known gems like Pantelleria, Elba, or the Aeolian Islands—reveal their most authentic selves. Fishermen reclaim their harbours, village festivals light up town squares, coastal trails become more walkable, and vineyards by the sea prepare for harvest.

In Spain, the Balearic Islands are a revelation in September: Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera offer warm, clear waters, quiet beaches, and sleepy towns where time seems to stand still. The Costa de la Luz, in Andalusia, glows with a special light, offering long days and gentle breezes.

Further south, the Maltese archipelago continues to enjoy summer well into autumn. With its mild climate, it’s the ideal time to explore rugged coastlines, hidden coves, and translucent seabeds—perfect for a final plunge. The mood is peaceful, the villages picturesque, and sister islands Gozo and Comino offer deep dives into nature and silence. Cultural riches abound here too: from medieval fortresses to traditional festivals, Malta is a destination where the sea and heritage blend seamlessly.

October belongs to more contemplative travellers—those who seek the sea not only for a swim, but to hear it, observe it, and witness how it shifts with the seasons. It’s a month of golden reflections, clear skies, unexpected swims on warmer days, and long walks on empty sands.

The Algarve, in southern Portugal, is ideal at this time. Its waves draw surfers from across the globe, while sheltered coves offer calm waters for swimming. Wind-sculpted cliffs, fishing villages, and bustling markets promise a more genuine, peaceful, and deeply felt holiday experience than August ever could.

In Cyprus, October still feels like a full summer. The sea is warm, days are long, and beach time alternates beautifully with inland excursions—through olive-dotted hills, ancient monasteries, and quiet trails.

Even southern Greek islands like Crete and Rhodes enjoy summer temperatures through late October. They offer the perfect blend of culture, nature, and relaxation. Here, the sea is not just a setting—it’s the heart of a timeless story, woven with myth, rich flavours, and heartfelt hospitality.
